We were recently in Atlanta Georgia where we rented a car and drove to Florida. Before we got out of Georgia entirely I saw a sign on the west side of I-75 South luring me to visit Georgia's largest Quilt Shop.

It was only a short detour and we needed to stop for lunch anyway.

This is a huge store with many departments within the shop and a great selection in each department.

Since we were flying home I resisted the temptation of buying too much fabric to bring home.

I did however find a piece of software that will help me embroider larger designs by splitting the embroidery design in half and making use of the giga hoop.
The search for good quilt shops in this area continues. I've found another shop - quite different from the others, located in Pickering, Art of Fabric.

One day I will take a class here, I'm looking at the class that teaches the technique of free motion stitching techniques on the petal of the tulips below. This shop specializes in a very artistic style quilting.
The quilt is done...
and the quilt is delivered.

The colours are bright...and the detail is a bit hidden in the colours. There are little paw prints in the borders - you can see them in this post.

I loved putting the label together for our little granddaughter.
Over the past few weeks I found a quilt shop on line that I have been able to explore in Oshawa. In fact the web presence of this store is very impressive! So I was anxious to see if what they said on their web site was true in our experience.

I am happy to report that this is a most delightful store and if our early experience is any indication this will be a quilt store I visit often. The sales staff were friendly and though the store was busy they were relaxed and took time to answer questions or find items.
It hasn't been easy finding a new "favourite quilt store" and few of the ones we've visited since moving would not entice me to return - but the Ultimate Sewing Centre is one I'll be returning to. You can see their web site here.

Shirley looked after us and answered our questions - even welcomed our (Fred's) thoughts on the web site.

I have signed up for one of their classes that will start later in February. I'm sure I will want to tell you about my progress.Fred and Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16756984054556329497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4389748725686937903.post-31966392071715125772013-01-30T05:00:00.000-07:002013-01-30T05:00:02.115-07:00A quilter's helperRachel loves to visit me in my sewing room. She loves the room for many reasons. I have a small blue stool in there that she can sit on...or carry off to another room to climb up on furniture! She loves that there are many colourful things in the room. I always enjoy her finding me in there, but sometimes I think it's all about the blue stool. When I have the door closed while working on a project I often hear her knocking on the door to see if I will let her in with me. In the photos you can see that one night I let her in when it was safe.

Whatever the reason I usually love her to be around. I loved being around my Grandmother and I learned many things that stand me in good stead today from her.
This is a sneak preview of a very special quilt I've been working on for the next grand baby due very soon! Amanda loves Winnie the Pooh and his friends so the quilt and the nursery will have a Pooh and friends theme.

The binding is on and the quilt label will be prepared once the little one has arrived and her name is announced.

I'll have another post with the label in a few weeks ...
I've discovered another nice, but small, quilt shop in our area. While the city seems to have disappointed me in customer service, quality and selection, outside the city has provided some good surprises. The small town of Jackson's Point is home to the Quilting Gnome. Once again it seems quilters and quilt shop owners are very aware of the great quilt shops in Alberta.
Just mention Canmore and her eyes light up! Which makes you wonder if people start these businesses to feed their own quilting addiction? Just a thought.

They had good displays and many quilting notions - that is quilt puzzles, quilting licence plates and a good display of quilts.
On the edge of Lake Simcoe, this is a great spot to visit and take in some beach time too!
The love of a grandmother!

Every quilt needs a label and this one I found at the Embroidery Library. I inserted into the design the special little girl's name that the quilt was created for, my granddaughter Rachel Emma.

I am enjoying trying out my new skills I learned in classes at the Red Deer Sewing Centre.

The software that is used on the computer is the Digi Jr by Janome. You can insert a file that is downloaded from an on-line store or from purchased CD software. It then allows you to customize the message or edit the file.
The file is then saved and transferred to the embroidery machine and stitched out.

I find the software to be similar (but a little more complex) to Microsoft's Publisher.

I hope every time Rachel sees this label she'll remember how much she is loved!

We've been thrilled to become Grandparents for the first time in 2011! We're enjoying this rich experience as much as possible. Of course being a grandmother means making my little granddaughter her own quilt. Susan was looking for an underwater theme for the bedroom, and now that Rachel is sleeping in her own crib, I thought I had better finish off this quilt.
Some of you have been watching the blocks take shape over the past year.

Rachel's quilt has turned out really well. For top stitching I stiched in the ditch for the vertical and horizontal seams, but it needed something else. Since the theme has to do with water, I decided to create a sense of ripples ringing out from a small pebble being dropped on the water's surface.

The circles reminded me of a pebble being dropped in a still pond

I finally have the finished product. This isn't a huge quilt - 16 - 6 1/2 inch blocks with sashings and a border.

As I continue to explore new skills on my machines, you will see in the next post, the quilt label for this special quilt.

So Rachel gets her first quilt from Grandma. I say first because I'm certain there will be others over the coming years!
I liked the layout of those shops, the people who worked there and of course the wonderful quilts that hung on their walls. Some shops mostly sold machines, others also sold fabric. There too it was wonderful to stop in, look to see what was new or if there were any attachments for my machines that I could use - there was learning in most visits.

Finding a quilting community here has been a struggle. It doesn't seem to be as obvious, and it sure isn't the same. Some days I long for my favourite shops!

Saturday we drove to Hamilton, to an area very familiar to me. This is the area that I knew well as a child, and went many times a week for church activities. Although the street (and area) along Ottawa Street has changed significantly it is still known for the numerous textile shops - something that has been well known for decades. On the beautiful Saturday with amazing weather for January, Fred and I wandered the street to see if they still had some of those shops. I wasn't disappointed, many of the shops have been updated and carried current textile lines. And, I did find several shops that carried cottons for future quilting projects.

I laughed when we discovered that one of the men at the Nova Sewing Centre...knew my shop keeper friends from Alberta - he named them all off. It turns out he once worked for Janome and travelled the country.

I have found a couple of shops now that deal with Janome machines - things are looking up!

So let me tell you with pictures what I found!

Fabric Collection

Any serious quilter is usually working on more than one project at a time. In fact the joy of quilting is knowing that the next project is already begun! This quilt began a while ago - the photo shows the arrangement of fabric at one of my favourite quilt shops in Calgary because of the amazing collection of fabrics. I find it very helpful when a store carries a fabric collection, fabrics that are created to coordinate together or be used as blenders . You can check-out My Sewing Room, they began in a much smaller shop and have really expanded in their newer location. As well as carrying fabrics the walls showcase many projects to inspire yet another project.Fred and Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16756984054556329497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4389748725686937903.post-18546397289855861092011-05-07T17:00:00.001-06:002011-05-07T17:01:02.645-06:00What would you call it?

The big learning in this was learning how to paper piece. This technique has you lining up each piece of fabric with a paper pattern and sewing on the lines. The purpose of this is to give you great points on your triangles without having to attempting to have the seams line up. Sound like it should be an easy way to sew if you are sewing on lines - right? Well in the end it does make it easier, but the process was very challenging for me. It does help to take a class and practice the technique a bit to get the hang of it. For good instructions on how to paper piece here is a link: bellaonline,
I really liked the colours that were used in this quilt. When I chose this quilt I had my oldest son in mind for the quilt knowing he would enjoy the colours used in it, had I known that the finishing kit for this included paper piecing I may not have so eagerly ventured on. As I work outside the home time is not in abundance for quilting, thus this quilt has taken me quite a long time to complete. After I had completed the 12 blocks over the year I then launched into the finishing kit. The first few instructions included Block A - Cornerstone - make 20. Triangle Sashing - Unit A - make 31 (seven step process), Unit B - make 31 (six step process). Ooops, this will take awhile, stay tuned...Fred and Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16756984054556329497noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4389748725686937903.post-54683238335206950892011-02-14T21:28:00.000-07:002011-02-14T21:28:40.422-07:00Block of the Month - Salsa NightsI've done several quilts using Block of the Month - through a store that has provided an efficient and economical method. This isn't true of all Block of the Month programs, many are quite expensive.
There are many offerings available from quilt shops and internet shops. As the name indicates you complete one block of a quilt each month. Several years ago I started the program with Along Came Quilting in Calgary. On the third Saturday of each month many of us would pickup our block kit containing the instructions and fabric to be completed for that month. On the third Saturday of the following month we would return with the completed block to show that we were keeping up with the program, then pick up the next block kit. At the end of the year we had 12 blocks that we could put together to create the quilt. An earlier blog post entitled My Second Quilt features my first quilt titled Tropical Breeze was completed this way.
Last year I was fortunate enough to finally save up enough money to buy myself an embroidery machine. After practicing for some time I felt adequate enough to bring quilting and embroidery together.

The project I chose was a lap quilt using a wintry print and adding snowflake embroidery. My Mom loves Cardinals (Fred: "the birds not the catholics") and the material had a lovely cardinal as part of the pattern. This came from a panel of material. This is a very creative way of taking a piece of material using it productively for a great end product.

And along the way we often stop in Red Deer - to grab a tea for me, coffee for Fred. Sometimes we top up the tank with fuel and if we have a bit of time I love to pop into another one of my favourite shops - The Red Deer Sewing Centre.

That brings me to add to my list of "things I love in a quilt shop"! Okay so it isn't really a quilt shop - it's a sewing machine and supply shop. First of all - they know my name. I feel like I have a connection there, like I'm important to Karen (the owner). She's patient and knowledgeable. She spends time in helping me find what I'm looking for or takes the time to show me something new.

As I've continued to add feet and attachments for my sewing machine this is the place that I keep returning to - they have an excellent selection and if it isn't in they will order it for me. I've even taken a class or two here. This week I spent some Christmas money in acquiring a circular sewing attachment.... hmmm, never thought I would want to sew in circles!!

There's a couple of quilt shops I've decided I'm not returning to - they have hurried me out or given every indication that I'm in their way. I've never had that feeling at The Red Deer Sewing Centre. Customer service is what's at hand here...and for me it makes the difference. In this day of on-line ordering I could probably be a quilter and never enter a store. However quilting has a community element to it, a sense of working in a world where people share a particular passion. Finding a store that understands that is both satisfying and adds to the joy of the journey.

Did I ever mention she got me hooked on an embroidery machine? More on that another time.Fred and Wendyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16756984054556329497noreply@blogger.com0
